Merdeka.com – A group of researchers from the International School of Advanced Studies in Italy (SISSA) claim to have discovered a relatively young new galaxy in the universe. LiveScience & Popular Mechanic reported, Tuesday (21/2), the discovery of the new galaxy was thanks to Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity.

“This is a very special celestial body. It is very bright,” said Marika Giulietti, one of the SISSA team.

Generally, celestial bodies in galaxies are so dark and dense that they are almost invisible. However, their findings are different. A galaxy is a collection of stars and celestial bodies that are held together by gravity.

“These very distant galaxies are real information about the evolutionary past and future of our universe. Yet studying them is challenging,” Giulietti said.

“They (the Galaxy – red) are very compact and therefore difficult to observe. Also, because of their distance, we receive very weak light from them,” he added.

The team utilized Einstein’s theory of general relativity to observe distant galaxies. The theory says that massive objects — such as galaxies or, occasionally, individual stars — distort the space around them, so that any light that passes through is magnified.

To be able to see them, researchers use a cosmic magnifying glass to look at other celestial bodies that are more distant. They use a device called the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The device is capable of penetrating a kind of interstellar dust that blocks clarity in a galaxy.

This tool the researchers say is able to ‘peep’ through the barrier to reveal young, active galaxies forming stars at 1,000 times the speed of the Milky Way.

It is hoped that the discovery of these new galaxies will provide invaluable insights into the formation and evolution of the historical structure of the Cosmos. The cosmos is a system in an orderly or harmonious universe.
