Three years after the end of their joint shopping power plant, Carrefour and Cooperative U finally returned an alliance. The Concordis purchase power station was born on July 7 in Brussels, with a double perimeter: the negotiation of purchase prices and the sale of international services. Carrefour, second French distributor, and U cooperative, fourth agrifood distribution group, have decided to combine their strength. With their European power station Concordis, the two groups want to increase their purchase volume to increase their competitiveness. “It will be effective in the next 2026 negotiations and for an initial period of six years,” said Carrefour and Cooperative U in their common press release.
Casino, Auchan and Intermarché already have their alliance
This alliance occurs less than a year after the creation of that of their Casino competitors, Auchan, and Intermarché, will have Retail. Together, the three groups reach almost 29.5 % market share according to Statista, ahead of Eurelec, the Leclerc power station which has around 24 % market share.
Crossroads and cooperative U becomes leader in the shopping market
The context of acceleration of “the concentration of industrialists and the rise of purchase power plants”, justifies this new alliance, explains Alexandre Bompard, CEO of Carrefour. With this operation, Carrefour (300,000 employees) and U cooperative (75,000 employees) are available the largest share, or around 32.6 % of the French market (20.6 % for Carrefour and 12 % for U cooperative). A position as a leader in purchasing in France that Concordis also targets on a European scale, eventually welcoming other European distributors.
