flags to Fly at Half-Staff Across Florida for Pearl Harbor remembrance Day
TALLAHASSEE,FL – December 7,2024 - In a solemn tribute to the lives lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor,flags across Florida will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today,Sunday,December 7th. The lowering of the flag honors the more than 2,400 Americans killed in the surprise military strike by Japan on December 7, 1941, which propelled the United States into world War II.
the annual observance, designated National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day by Public Law 103-308, was approved by Congress in 1994 and calls for the President to issue a proclamation urging the nation to remember the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. The law specifically requests that federal agencies and citizens fly the U.S. flag at half-staff in remembrance of those who died consequently of their service at Pearl Harbor.
Flags should be raised briskly to the top of the pole for a moment before being slowly lowered to the half-staff position. Before being lowered for the day, the flag should again be raised to the top. it’s crucial to note that the proper terminology differs depending on location: flags are flown at half-staff on shore and at half-mast on ships and naval stations.
