A newborn baby was found in Därstetten on Saturday morning. A private individual reported to the Bern cantonal police shortly after 07.35 on Saturday that they had found an infant at the work yard in Därstetten. On the spot, the rescue workers found that it was a newborn girl.

As mayor Thomas Knutti says when asked for 20 minutes, the baby was in a cardboard box. A blanket was placed over the box. “The baby probably survived thanks to the woolen blanket,” Knutti believes.
The room is open 365 days a year. Outside temperature prevails in the open space, as Knutti says. “We use it for our waste and glass disposal. There is also a garbage press in it. »Knutti continues:« Perhaps the person hoped that the baby would be found because Saturday is the day of disposal. »
However, he cannot imagine that a resident of Därstetten has put the baby away. “You know each other in a village of 850 people.”
Police are looking for witnesses
An ambulance team cared for the hypothermic newborn before the girl was flown to the hospital in critical condition with a Rega helicopter.
The Bern cantonal police have launched an investigation to clarify the child’s origin and identity. According to initial knowledge, it must be assumed that the girl was taken to the place where she was found immediately after her birth.

The police are looking for witnesses who have made observations in the area of the workshop or who have a woman in their vicinity who may have been expecting a child, but whose whereabouts are unclear. Information on +41 33 224 86 31 will be treated confidentially. As the cantonal police say on request, finding the mother is currently the top priority. They may also need medical help.
