20 minutes – This is how Austria reacts to the obligation to wear a mask

Austria has decided on new measures to curb the spread of the corona virus. In addition to further reducing social contacts, the government led by Chancellor Sebastian Kurz is wearing protective masks, as the Chancellor did in Vienna on Monday announced. The masks are not intended to protect the wearer, but to reduce the spread of the virus through the air.

Are you in Switzerland for a mask requirement?

The masks are to be distributed via supermarket chains from Wednesday. These can then only be entered with masks. In the medium term, mouth and nose protection in Austria should be mandatory wherever people go by.

Lockdown still acceptable?

The first reactions to the decision to wear a mask are different. A journalist from Austria recalls on Twitter: “So now a mask requirement in Austria. Decided in the Czech Republic and Slovakia on March 18. Bring nothing anyway, it was said in this country, when they all had to wear there long ago. » Another Twitter user simply says: “Yes moin”.

An Austrian local politician is wondering whether the lockdown should not be lifted now: «After a mask requirement in supermarkets, can it be argued that other shops have to keep closed? Why not open all for mask wearers and limit the number of customers? »

The liberal party Neos simply says dryly: “If we had held a press conference at which we would announce a mandatory mask, we would have shown it straight away.”

«I sew a full body mask»

An Austrian also reacts with humor. She writes on social media that she can also sew a full-body mask and wallow in disinfectants. The Swiss also look beyond the national border. One man, for example, thinks that in Austria the mask will soon be compulsory and that our federal councilors will still say that it doesn’t work.

«HSG professor: we should take an example»

Some health experts in Austria are satisfied with the move. For days, these have been demanding the introduction of such a mask requirement. An open letter from scientists even said that it was “long overdue”. After all, the viruses would come into circulation especially if infected people cough. And as it is said again and again, infected people often do not even know at the beginning that they have the corona virus.

In this country too, the reactions are inevitable. HSG professor Monika Bütler, for example, also calls for a mask requirement for Switzerland: “We should take the Austrians as an example.”
