20 minutes – the sea washes away dream beaches worldwide

By the end of the century, half of the world’s sandy beaches will have disappeared: According to a study by scientists from the EU and several European universities these days in the journal “Nature Climate Change” published.

By 2050, around 15 percent of the beaches will be so eroded that they can no longer be recognized as such. By 2100, according to researchers, half of all sandy beaches will decline by more than 100 meters – many of them are doomed.

Beaches worldwide in danger

Beaches in densely populated areas on the US coasts, in southern Asia, Russia, Argentina, Chile, Mexico and also Europe are also affected.

The reasons for the destruction of the beaches are the rise in sea levels and more violent storms that accelerate erosion. The researchers found a direct relationship between the amount of greenhouse gases and the severity of damage to the beaches. These occupy more than a third of the world’s coastlines and also serve as buffers that protect the mainland from storms.

In addition, many of them have an indefinable tourist and social value. With almost half of the 7,100 km of coastline, many beaches in Australia are particularly at risk.

Many beaches are also affected in Florida, California, Hawaii and Brazil. The famous Copacabana has already suffered major damage, such as CNN reported. In Miami, for example, thousands of tons of sand are carted onto the beaches to compensate for the erosion. But according to geologists, the authorities are fighting a battle that they can only lose in the long run.
