A Turkish-born man was granted a residence and work permit in the canton of St. Gallen for 20 euros. But not legally. How «The messenger» reports, the man obtained an Italian identity card through a third party after his application failed legally.
The fake ID was not exposed in his residential community in Ebnat-Kappel. Instead, he received a work and residence permit B. At the end of 2014, he was said to have started working in a grocery store in Winterthur and had worked there until his arrest in January 2019. The fake ID remained undetected for more than four years.
Turk is fined and fined
As the newspaper reports, the man was uncovered as part of a job inspection, was arrested and has now been sentenced by the Winterthur-Unterland public prosecutor to a conditional fine of 4,800 francs and a fine of 1,000 francs. He was accused of falsifying ID cards, illegal residence and gainful employment without a permit.
Non-EU citizens have often tried to enter Switzerland with falsified documents. The Federal Office of Police is said to report several hundred such passport forgeries every year. But many also go undetected, since since joining the Schengen Agreement, the municipalities have been increasingly responsible for detecting such counterfeits.
There is now a passport reader that is still not widely used and that is supposed to reliably detect counterfeits. It is not known whether this was used in the documents of the convicted Turk.
