20 minutes – “I saved CHF 100 while shopping”

The Manor department store on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse has been selling its products since Thursday with discounts of up to 70 percent. Shortly after the shop opened at nine o’clock, numerous bargain hunters flocked through the departments on Saturday morning.

Are you a bargain hunter?

Whether toys, electronics, household appliances or office supplies – small or large bargains lured everywhere. However, many shelves were already bought empty. While some visitors left the department store packed with shopping bags, others went home empty-handed (see video).

«More than double the previous year’s sales»

Manor made a positive interim assessment on Saturday afternoon. “The branch in Zurich was very well attended on Saturday and we have recorded more than double the previous year’s turnover in the past few days,” said Manor media spokesman Fabian Hildbrand to 20 Minuten.

Two women were not chasing bargains, sitting comfortably over coffee in the Manora restaurant. They meet here for breakfast every Saturday morning, they said. They didn’t want to jump into the fray. They were already mourning the department store. “If the manor is closed, there will no longer be a shop on Bahnhofstrasse with such diverse offers in the middle price segment and such lovely employees,” said one woman sadly.

“I feel sorry for the employees”

The staff did not leave many bargain hunters cold either. “The sale is great. But I’m sorry for the employees, »said a man who left the shop with two shopping bags in hand.

It was announced on Friday that Manor will release a number of employees from the squad. Around a dozen department store directors and an estimated 40 employees will be fired, Manor said. The company reorganized its 60 department stores into 28 sales units. The locations in Liestal and Delémont, two of a total of 31 supermarkets, will be closed.

At the end of January, Manor has to close its location on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse. This was preceded by years of unsuccessful negotiations with the landlord Swiss Life. Before that, however, the department store offers some bargains: On January 16, a total clearance sale is due.
