Merdeka.com – NASA’s Perseverance rover or rover recently photographed Planet Mars and the results indicate that there was once a large and fast-flowing river on the planet in the past. It also helps researchers find evidence of ancient microbial life in Mars’ history.
The US space agency reported its findings last Thursday and said the river may have been “part of a waterway that flows into Jezero Crater.” Rover Perseverance has been exploring the crater since it landed on the red planet more than two years ago.
Quoted from The Jerusalem Post, Wednesday (17/5), NASA researchers are trying to determine whether the water in the former river flows in a shallow stream.
NASA said the river was discovered when the Mastcam-Z Perseverance rover took hundreds of images while exploring the “top of a fan-shaped pile of sedimentary rock” which has curved layers whose shapes indicate water flow. The sedimentary rock that the rover explored stands over 800 feet high as a place called Shrinkle Haven. The river may also have carried large debris.
Researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Libby Ives, said the recorded data indicated that the high-energy river carried a lot of debris.
“The faster the water flows, the easier it is to move larger pieces of material,” he explained.
Other evidence supporting the fast-flowing view of the river is due to the location of Pinestand, which is on a piece of evidence 0.28 miles from Shrinkle Haven, according to Space.com.
