IDI Called No Research on the Effect of the Covid-19 Vaccine for Pregnant Women

Merdeka.com – Head of the Advocacy Team for the Implementation of Vaccination for the Executive Board of the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI), Iris Rengganis said, there had been no research on the effect of the Covid-19 Vaccine for pregnant women on their babies.

This statement was delivered in response to a recent study report from Israel which found the positive impact of corona vaccination on pregnant women.

“Research on pregnant women is unethical if we really are not sure. So, there is no study of any vaccine on pregnant women,” said Iris when contacted by ANTARA at Jakarta, Sunday (21/3).

Ethical considerations are the reason that until now experts have not conducted in-depth research on the effect of the Covid-19 vaccine on pregnant women and their babies.

“Yes, if we make a statement, later if the child is disabled or something, don’t blame us. That’s unethical,” he said.

The recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) on the use of influenza vaccine for pregnant women is good news. However, this policy does not necessarily apply to other vaccines such as the Covid-19 vaccine.

The Covid-19 vaccine, which is now circulating in various countries through an emergency use permit, still requires more in-depth research.

That is why the government has not yet recommended the use of the Covid-19 Vaccine for pregnant women. “Because the adult group vaccination participants are still very careful, there should be no comorbids, the distance is long and so on,” he said.

Iris also stated that there is a fact that a pregnant woman’s antibodies can be transmitted to the baby through the intake of breast milk (ASI) and the umbilical cord or placenta.

“There are five kinds of antibodies, which we talk about IgG for infection. Now this IgG will be given by the mother through breast milk or from the mother through the umbilical cord to the baby. But, we don’t know whether the antibody is specific or not, but in essence, it’s antibodies. as a whole, “he said.

Reported by the alodokter.com page, it is stated that Immunoglobulin G or IgG is a type of antibody that is most commonly found in blood and other body fluids.

When antigens such as germs, viruses, or certain chemicals enter the body, white blood cells will “remember” the antigen and form antibodies to fight it.

Thus, the immune system will easily recognize it and fight back because antibodies have already been formed.

“That’s why breast milk is recommended, not cow’s milk, so that he has antibody defenses from the mother. But the antibodies are not specific, they are global, they are general in nature,” he said.

For this reason, Iris said the Covid-19 vaccine made it possible to be given to groups of breastfeeding mothers. “But you know Sinovac, we haven’t talked about the others yet,” he said.

Iris hopes that if the mother has formed antibodies against Covid-19, it is hoped that it can also flow to her child through breast milk. (mdk / noe)
