20 minutes – Samsung copies Apple’s Face ID logo

A presentation from Samsung caused a stir at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. It was actually about the company’s password manager, the “Samsung Pass”. However, the faux pas only happened 50 minutes after the start of the keynote and only lasted 15 seconds.

How do you unlock your smartphone?

H. S. Kim, head of the consumer electronics sector at Samsung, was talking about cybersecurity when symbols appeared behind him – including that for facial recognition. Although the icons could only be seen briefly, many visitors did not miss the fact that it was exactly the same icon as Apple uses for its Face-ID.

Intention or oversight?

It is not the first time that Samsung is suspected of having copied ideas from Apple. In fact, the two companies have been in litigation for years over whether Samsung has copied the iPhone and its software almost pixel by pixel. Samsung then had to pay $ 569 million for patent rights.

It is not clear whether the latest copy case was a deliberate swipe against Apple or an error. So far, Samsung has not made any public statements. However, the presentation at CES has so far been the only place where the Face ID icon has appeared. It is not found in Samsung’s software or in any other company release.
