One person who should actually take on this job is Florian Kainz (31). But the captain has been in a low performance for weeks and was always replaced prematurely under coach Timo Schultz (46). The Ösi played too often in different positions this season (including six, ten, wing, striker) and seems totally insecure. Most recently, Kainz was substituted after 67 minutes in the 0-1 win against Bremen. Hardly any captain at other clubs has as little playing time as the Cologne player. Kainz therefore also has to worry about his European Championship ticket with Austria.
Who would have expected that before this season…?

The bad thing: While Jeff Chabot (25) is the defense boss, there is no one in the team other than Kainz who takes on a leadership role offensively! Almost all of the boss candidates have to deal with themselves (e.g. Ljubicic) or are injured (Selke, Uth).

Former coach Steffen Baumgart (52/now HSV) had the same boss problem after the departures of ex-stars Jonas Hector (33/retired career) and Ellyes Skhiri (28/Frankfurt). And squad builder Christian Keller (45) recently admitted openly at the members’ regulars’ table: “As the person in charge, I was unable to compensate for the departures of Jonas Hector and Ellyes Skhiri.”
The result: While players like Sargis Adamyan (30) and Dominique Heintz (30), who were also brought in because of their experience, usually only sit on the bench, the young stars Max Finkgräfe (19) and Justin Diehl (19) have to now push the team forward, take on standards and responsibility. But the boss vacuum remains. That’s why Schultz never tires of emphasizing: “It will depend above all on the experienced players.”
The great hope lies in the return of Davie Selke (29). The striker is missing not only because of his goal threat…
