20 minutes – luxury hotel closes and dismisses 140 employees

The Hotel Atlantis at the foot of the Uetliberg was a style icon in the 1970s that attracted international stars such as Muhammed Ali, Steve McQueen and Queen front singer Freddie Mercury. After the bankruptcy in 2004, investors from Qatar bought the hotel and renovated it generously. It was then reopened in 2015 and is also the hotel of the Swiss national soccer team. However, this will end at the end of April.

“The board of directors of the Zurich Hotel Atlantis plans to close operations at the end of April,” it said in a media release on Tuesday. The reasons are the cost structure and the rapidly deteriorating economic situation due to the Corona crisis. “As is known, the owner is holding talks with investors who plan to take over the hotel in a few months and, if need be, convert it,” it continues. The aim of the board of directors is to sell the hotel to a worthy, competent successor in the long term.

140 employees affected

140 employees are affected by these measures. The consultation period begins on April 14 and runs until the end of April. A special fund is available for long-term employees.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Neue Hotel Atlantis AG, Issa Al Kawari, explains: «The employees and the management company Giardino Group AG have done an excellent job in recent years and have positioned the hotel favorably. We therefore very much regret the possible closure of the hotel, but the current economic crisis leaves us with no other choice. »

Zurich Tourism regrets the closure: “There is no longer an attractive hotel, one of the pearls of the city,” spokesman Ueli Heer said on request. That is a shame for the guests, because the selection is so small.
