20 minutes – He was in a coma for 8 days and survived Corona

“It is a miracle for all of us that my dad survived the corona virus,” says 30-year-old Sara Liniger to 20 minutes. Her father, Raul Norinha from Ennetbürgen NW, fell ill with the Covid 19 pathogen in early March. At that time, not even the borders to Italy were closed in Switzerland, there were also fewer than a hundred infected people. «In the first week of March my dad noticed flu-like symptoms. He got severe headache and body aches and went to see a doctor. He diagnosed a bacterial infection and prescribed antibiotics, »says the medical practice assistant.

Are you concerned with the corona virus?

But the antibiotics also did not change Raul Norinha’s symptoms. The health of the 55-year-old deteriorated – cough was added. «When I noticed that my father was not doing well, I had him admitted to the Nidwalden Cantonal Hospital. After all, he already suffers from sarcoidosis, a lung disease, and is therefore considered a risk patient, »says Sara. Finally, on March 10, certainty followed: Raul and his wife tested positive for the corona virus. Where the family became infected with the coronavirus is still unclear. Inpatient treatment was initially refused because the 55-year-old had no breathing problems.

«Doctors were there for us and made video calls possible»

But the situation changed a day later: «He was hospitalized. On March 15, we were informed that my dad’s health had deteriorated so badly that he had to be transferred to the intensive care unit, put in an artificial coma, and ventilated. » Visits to the family were not possible due to the quarantine requirements, said the 30-year-old. “The doctors told us that we had no choice but to wait. But they always took the time to tell us how Papi is doing. We couldn’t give him or him any strength. » A video call was also made possible by the hospital staff while the father was in a coma, Sara said.

“When it was said that his chances of survival were very poor, we prayed and always held that he would wake up again. I also advise everyone: never give up hope, no matter how bad it may seem at first », says the believing Christian who goes to the Free Christian Community in Aarau.

“My dad just cried for happiness”

It was only after eight days that the family could breathe a sigh of relief: “They stopped taking sleep medication last Sunday and he started to open his eyes. On Monday he even called me via Facetime. He was just crying with happiness, it was very emotional, »says the 30-year-old. In the meantime, the 55-year-old is said to be able to get up and walk again. He has also been released from the intensive care unit.

In addition to Sara’s parents, other relatives have also contracted the virus. «All of my father’s brothers had to be hospitalized. But in the meantime everyone except my dad has been released. The whole family is finally out of danger, ”says the 30-year-old.
