20 minutes – are we no longer receiving parcels from China?

If you order goods from China online, you probably have to wait longer than usual at the moment: Because of the corona virus, numerous international flights to China are canceled. This affects the mailing. This means that only a third of parcels and letters can be delivered from Switzerland to China. There may also be delays when importing shipments from China into Switzerland, as the Swiss Post announced.

Some Swiss consumers could feel this: Because in this country people shop hard at Asian online shops. Last year, Swiss Post received around 78,000 items a day from Asia alone. “The majority comes from online retailers like Alibaba or Wish,” says a post spokeswoman for 20 minutes.

Packages arrive in passenger planes

Because no cargo planes from China land in Zurich, most parcels from China have to be transported in passenger planes. But at the moment only the Swiss and Cathay Pacific are flying from Zurich to Hong Kong and back, as a spokeswoman for Zurich Airport explains on request. All other flights to China were discontinued by the end of February. The cities of Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen are usually served weekly.

“It may well be that goods from China are increasingly coming to Switzerland by land,” says Patrick Kessler, President of the Swiss Mail Order Association. Many orders from China come to Germany with cargo planes. From there, the parcels are then taken to Switzerland by truck. But that takes longer.

Less small parcels from China

In fact, the restricted air traffic is already having an impact on mailing from China: According to Swiss Post, fewer small goods from China reach Switzerland. This includes packages up to 2 kilograms, which many Asian online retailers send. Mail from Alibaba or Wish are largely comparable to somewhat thicker letters, a spokeswoman for the Post explains.

The reason for this could lie with the Chinese Post: It is currently storing parcels and letters that are intended for abroad, as the Universal Postal Union in Bern says at 20 minutes. Chinese domestic mail is even disinfected regularly. In regions where the corona virus is widespread, postal items are no longer delivered by people. For example, the Internet company JD.com uses drones to deliver packages to affected regions and cities.
