20 minutes – the airspace is so empty compared to April 2019

The airspace over Europe is significantly emptier than usual during the Corona crisis. According to Eurocontrol, the European organization for security in aviation, 87 percent fewer aircraft are currently flying over the continents than was the case in April 2019.

Specifically, on April 18, 2019 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. around 3,100 aircraft flew over the European airspace. As an animation shows, on April 16, 2020 there were only around 400 aircraft during the same period. In total, only 4162 aircraft flew over Europe on the day measured.

“It’s sad to see that,” writes Eamonn Brennan, director of Eurocontrol on Twitter. “But we will come back.”
