20 minutes – teams threaten lawsuit after engine dispute

Shortly before the start of the season, a dispute rages in Formula One. In a joint letter, seven teams, including industry leader and series world champion Mercedes, severely attacked the FIA.

What do you think of the team’s joint statement?

The reason for this is an investigation into Ferrari’s controversial drive unit. At the end of the investigation, the FIA had agreed with Scuderia that all content should remain between the two parties. Ferrari had been accused of cheating on the engine several times last season.

“We, the signing teams, were surprised and shocked,” says the joint statement by Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull, Alpha Tauri, Renault, Racing Point and Williams on Wednesday. They refer to the FIA announcement of February 28th. At the time, the regulating authority had announced in just under six lines that the parties had kept silent and that Ferrari had agreed on a number of technical obligations to improve the monitoring of the drive unit.

Engine suddenly much faster

Between the lines, quite a few read out that at Scuderia last year not everything had to be done rightly with the so-called power unit. After years of superiority of the Mercedes engine, Ferrari’s drive had been up to half a second faster on the straights last year.

The seven teams, which were not joined by Ferrari’s partner teams Haas and the Swiss racing team Alfa Romeo, also reserve the right to take legal action in the context of the FIA’s procedure, and are threatening to file a lawsuit.

Around a week and a half before the start on March 15 in Melbourne into a season that could be severely affected by the corona virus, this argument should not be resolved quickly. If the results are published, the front against Ferrari could become even more massive. And the FIA could incriminate itself if it had possibly not punished the rules accordingly.
