Huang works at Hankou Railway Station. The traffic junction is about one kilometer west of the fish market, which is considered the breeding ground for the life-threatening virus. The day after the first symptoms, Huang felt very tired and had difficulty breathing. At first he thought it was an ordinary cold. He signed off from work sick and went to an emergency at a local hospital.
Symptoms like pneumonia
The doctors prescribed penicillin and other medications, but Huang did not improve even after three days of treatment. Fearing that he could lose his job after so many days away, he decided to go back to work. But on the bus he got a fever and went straight back to the hospital.
The doctors found abnormal liver tests in the new exam. Still, they sent Huang home. On January 1, the 23-year-old obtained a second opinion in another hospital. There the doctors thought it could be pneumonia.
Quarantined immediately
When one of the doctors wrote the patient’s report, he noticed that Huang was working near the fish market. The staff immediately transferred the man to the Jinyintan hospital, where three coronavirus patients were quarantined.
At that point, Huang was doing very badly: he could hardly move, and pure oxygen was pumped into the lungs. The doctors and nursing staff who treated him were wearing full-body suits. “Not a single inch of skin was exposed,” Huang recalls.
On January 2, the fever finally subsided. Huang has now recovered completely. “I was the first to recover from a critical condition and leave the hospital,” he said.
China is closing down
By Thursday, the virus was detected in at least 620 people in China. These included around 100 serious cases, all in the Hubei province with the particularly affected metropolis of Wuhan. The virus has so far been proven to cause death in 18 people – mostly older people with previous illnesses.
With the wave of travel to the Chinese New Year next Saturday, the risk of spreading the viral disease is growing. The country’s largest annual wave of travel involves several hundred million Chinese people. In Beijing, all major events and temple celebrations for the New Year celebrations were canceled due to fear of the virus. In addition, the Imperial Palace in Beijing will be closed to visitors from Saturday.
