20 minutes – «80 donuts per day end up in the trash»

A Dunkin ‘Donuts employee accuses the company of food waste. Around 80 donuts are thrown away at the Hinwil branch each day. On peak days, over 300 pieces. That is around 15 to 20 percent of the quantity ordered, writes the newspaper “Zürcher Oberländer”. The donut multi contests these numbers. An on-site inspection would show the following, the newspaper writes: A delivery truck driver arrives in Hinwil at six in the morning. After delivering the fresh donuts, the driver throws a large rubbish bag of the sweet baked goods from the previous day into a waste bin.

How do you handle food waste?

390 donuts are ordered per day

“It’s insane,” says an employee of the “Zürcher Oberländer”, who now wants to take action against the donut waste: “What annoys me the most is that we can only give away 12 and, in exceptional cases, 24 pieces a day at a discount.” The company dictates it so.

There are also strict requirements for the sellers in the Dunkin ‘Donut stores, she says. At least 15 of each variety would have to be ordered. That currently makes at least 390 donuts a day. No matter how many you can actually sell.

Dunkin’Donuts try to keep food waste low

The Hinwil branch is managed by a franchise company. Dunkin ‘Donuts managing director Alina Ghindea comments on the topic of food waste in Zurich’s Oberland region: The company is trying to reduce food waste and “keep the waste value” as low as possible “with the option of a second delivery. Orders are placed every day and are “situation and weather dependent”.
