Harriet and Jack Morrison had been together for almost 65 years and now died on the same day in a retirement home near the city of St. Louis in the United States – hand in hand. «I am sad, but I know that they rest in peace and are now reunited. Her love story was made for a novel, ”says her niece Sue Wagener, who grew up with the Morrisons.

First date on Halloween
The two met when Harriet accompanied their father to a concert by the “Drum and Bugle” brass band in which he played. Jack was behind the wheel of the bus that was supposed to drive the group to the concert. They finally had their first date, a dinner, on Halloween in 1955. “From that day on, the two were inseparable,” says Wagener. The marriage followed six months later. The couple raised Wagener and two biological sons.
Broken neck when falling
About a year ago, Harriet stumbled while walking her dog and broke her pelvis and hip. Since she also suffered from dementia, she then moved to The Woodlands of Arnold nursing home and rehabilitation center. After Jack broke his neck in a fall, he also moved into the nursing home, just four rooms away from his wife. They had common naps, where one was in a wheelchair and the other in bed – hands always clasped. Wagener says that Harriet recognized her husband some days but not others.
At Christmas time Harriet stopped eating and drinking and when Jack heard this, he did the same. On January 10, Wagener was informed that Jack was dying. His wife’s bed was then moved to his room. Just a few hours after the 86-year-old died on January 11, his wife followed him.
