Local Transport Strike in Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland, and Trier Region – Updates and Impact
As of: February 26, 2024 2:40 a.m
It’s just the start of the warning strike week in local transport: Today, bus drivers in Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland and the Trier region in particular are being called on to strike – numerous connections could be cancelled.
The warning strike week of the ver.di union in local public transport begins with work stoppages by bus drivers in Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland and the Trier region. Numerous bus connections are likely to be canceled as a result.
In Schleswig-Holstein, employees of private bus companies are called on to go on a five-day warning strike. Urban traffic in Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg and Neumünster is excluded. In Saarland, the municipal transport companies in Saarbrücken, Saarlouis, Völklingen and Neunkirchen are on strike all day, and two bus operators in the Trier region.
Restrictions also in Berlin
In Berlin, transport companies expect restrictions on bus, tram and subway traffic until this afternoon. The reason here is a warning strike by three other unions.
Ver.di has planned industrial action across Germany from Monday to Saturday, regionally on different days. The main strike day is Friday, March 1st. Bavaria is the only federal state not affected.
Shorter working hours
Parallel to the warning strikes, Fridays For Future is organizing numerous demonstrations against the climate crisis on March 1st. The regional collective bargaining rounds focus on the working conditions for employees. Ver.di demands shorter working hours without financial losses, longer rest periods between individual shifts, more vacation days or more vacation pay.

ver.di: Increase the pressure again for the third round of negotiations
“We want a solution in the third round of negotiations,” emphasizes Stephanie Peifer, Managing Director of the ver.di district of Düssel-Rhein-Wupper. “But the signals from the employers’ side so far show that they have not yet understood the seriousness of the situation!” Ver.di is therefore calling the employees of Rheinbahn AG, WSW mobil, Stadtwerke Solingen Verkehr, Stadtwerke Remscheid Verkehr, Bahnen der Stadt Monheim and the Regiobahn (RE 47 and S28) went on strike all day at the beginning of the third round of negotiations on March 27. The employees of the Düsseldorf Airport Group are also invited. The strikes at the airport also affect aviation security employees, who are also involved in a nationwide wage dispute.
“Unfortunately, the present offer from the public employers does not allow any other answer, because it is disrespectful and thus fuels the collective bargaining conflict. The dissatisfaction of the employees is enormous and the willingness to go on strike is increasing from day to day. In the third round of negotiations, the employer side has the opportunity to prevent long-term strike measures by making an offer that can be agreed,” said Peifer.
Note for editors:
On March 27, at 9:00 a.m., the strikers meet at the airport in the departure hall of Gate B by the escalator. After the opening rally, a demonstration procession starts around the airport with an intermediate rally in front of the airport company. Delegations from local transport companies are also expected to attend this demonstration.
