New fans to continue expanding ICU capacity

Another 84 fans donated by the national government to the department of Atlántico arrived on a National Police plane this Sunday to strengthen intensive care units for the public and private network in the midst of a health emergency by COVID-19.

This donation joins the one that was received last week, also by the Government to this department, one of the most hit by the coronavirus and declared by the authorities on orange alert for the increase in cases. Of the 84 fans, 34 will go to the District, while the other 50 to the Government.

With this new endowment, the city expands its capacity to 624 ICUs, being the largest in the country, as announced by Mayor Jaime Pumarejo Heins. Before the crisis, the city had 411 ICUs, while during the three months of the pandemic it increased by 134 units.

“We have the largest installed ICU capacity in the country. They are scarce and there has always been a worldwide fight to get them, but we plan the most critical scenarios and we acted quickly from the first days of the pandemic in order to have them on time, “said the president.

Pumarejo reported that 78 of the 99 fans that arrived last week by the national government are currently in the process of being installed, which will reach an additional 213 ICUs, for a growth of 52%.

The 99 fans previously received were installed as follows: 78 in Barranquilla, eight in Sabanalarga, five in Soledad, four in Luruaco and four more in Baranoa.

To date, the city has received 174 fans, of which 108 have been donated by the national government, 37 acquired with the District’s own resources and 29 donated by the private sector.
