Breast Cancer Prevention: Famous Czech Women Advocate for Self-Examination and Mammograms

Life is full of paradoxes. On the day of the event to prevent breast cancer and support sick women, the Czech Republic was saddened by the news of the death of the singer Patricia Janečková, who succumbed to this insidious disease. Famous women from the Czech Republic emphasize the importance of prevention.

Pink October is dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer and is accompanied by many events that try to make people not neglect it. But on the very day of one of these events, which regularly hosts and educates famous Czech women, the entire Czech Republic was saddened by the news of the death of the 25-year-old singer Patricia Janečková.

Janečková just succumbed to breast cancer, with which she was fighting for the second time. “This news hit me very hard, we weren’t friends, but we were colleagues,” said the devastated actress and presenter Kateřina Pechová, who learned about it on the way to the preventive event.

”It was a life paradox that you go to moderate an event about breast cancer and you receive the news that your colleague succumbed to breast cancer. I had to process it, but I take it as the more important to talk about it and appeal to all women, that even self-examination can save their lives,” added Pechová.

Anyone can get breast cancer. Young and old women, but also men. “Due to my age, I already regularly go for mammograms. I used to be afraid, now I’m not afraid, I’m such a responsible patient,” TV Nova presenter Kristina Kloubková described.

According to the director of the Alliance of Women with Breast Cancer Štěpánka Pokorné, the numbers show that mammograms have saved more than 50,000 lives in the Czech Republic over twenty years. “Prevention should not be underestimated, it has already saved a lot of lives. And we, who are an endangered group, because my mother had breast cancer, it might even save our lives,” mentioned actress Míša Tomešová.

Despite the emotional complexity of the topic, many famous women were not afraid to share their personal experiences. “It was difficult. I have a brother in a wheelchair and I was a freshman at the conservatory. The whole family was confused, and even more so, my mother said to herself that she couldn’t leave us here and had to fight. So I’m very happy that she is now a full-fledged mother and grandmother to my children,” revealed Tomešová.

“My grandmother suffered from breast cancer twice, as did my mother-in-law and my best friend’s mother. So I have a lot of that around me. They are breastless, but fine,” added actress Aneta Krejčíková.

Self-examination is the least that everyone can do regularly for prevention. “I thought about myself. We often feel that it happens to others and not to us, but it can happen to each of us, so I will definitely start with prevention,” said actress Denisa Pfauserová.

In short, prevention saves lives. “I go regularly, I should go every two years, but I go every year. It’s important to me,” said actress Lenka Zahradnická. “I felt a lump in my breast two years ago, it was nothing serious, but I think prevention is important,” concluded model Veronika Hejlíková.
