We are talking about money, or more precisely, about wages. Many footballers currently do without this (or at least a part). This to accommodate their clubs in difficult financial times. At FC Barcelona, the players also discussed with those responsible. The parties agree that wages should be cut. How high the cuts should be, however, is still unclear.
On Wednesday evening, players and board members at FC Barcelona will again discuss possible conditions for realizing the model at the Catalan football club. Many questions remain open. Most of the Barça players had previously rejected a wage reduction of 70 percent.
Messi donated 1 million euros
From a purely labor law perspective, the matter is extremely complicated. If short-time work is registered in Spain, the contracts of the employees can be terminated at short notice. This is how the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” writes, citing the employment law specialist Jesús Cruz. In extreme cases, a player’s wages could even amount to the unemployment benefit of the state, for which there is an upper limit: 981 euros per person. Workers with three children, such as superstar Lionel Messi, would get 1210 euros a month. The Argentine usually has an annual salary of 40 million euros. It is doubtful that the Barcelona players get involved in this theater.
In addition to the whole huddle of wages, the football professionals have been acting on their own for days in connection with the effects of the corona virus. Lionel Messi, for example, has already donated one million euros. “This donation is used, among other things, for research and the purchase of ventilators for the care of critically ill patients,” he said.
