This is the best photo of the comet in history, winner of the astronomy contest of the year

Merdeka.com – A rare comet that will never pass through Earth again was photographed by Gerald Rhemann at the Namibian Space Observatory on Christmas Day 2021.

The photo, named Comet Leonard, won the annual astronomy photograph contest organized by the Royal Observatory Greenwich in London, England.

Quoted by the BBC, Friday (16/9), the comet was first seen in 2021 ago. After being photographed successfully, the comet has now left the solar system and continues its journey into space.

The photo of Comet Leonard himself is considered by the Royal Observatory to be an extraordinary photo.

“Comets look different from hour to hour – that’s a very surprising thing,” Rhemann said.

During the photograph, Rhemann did not know if the comet’s tail would break off, leaving a glowing dust behind.

“I really enjoyed taking this picture. This is an important thing in my photographic career, ”she explained.

Astronomer Dr Ed Bloomer said the photo was one of the best comet photos in history.

“Perfect astrophotography (astrophotography) is a blend of science and art. Not only is it technically sophisticated and projects the viewer into a deep dark space, but it is visually engaging and exciting, ”said Dr Hannah Lyons, assistant art creator at Royal Museums Greenwich.

Not only Rhemann, but also two 14-year-old Chinese boys named Yang Hanwen and Zhou Zezhen won the contest for the best photo of the Andromeda Galaxy.

“I think this photo shows how beautiful our closest neighbor (the Andromeda Galaxy) is,” said Yang Hanwen.

Dr Lyons said he was “amazed” by the quality of the young photographer who was able to “deliver the most extraordinary images”.

Various other photos also won awards during the event, such as a photo of the Arctic Lights taken by a Slovak photographer named Filip Hrebenda, then a photo of the moon taken by a Hungarian photographer named Peter Szabo, then a photo of IC 1805 an area full of gas and stardust, taken by the Hungarian photographer Peter Feltoti, also with a photo of the Helix Nebula taken by Weitang Liang, then a photo of the sun taken by Pauline Wolley, and finally a photo of the Milky Way taken by Lun Deng.
