In Russia, war supporters and opponents may soon find themselves on a common front against Putin

Dmitry Palyuga, a local politician living in St. Petersburg, says Russia’s defeat in the war can unite liberal citizens and war supporters.

The common goal could be to remove Putin from power, Paljuga tells CNN, who is calling for the president’s impeachment to begin.

Paljuga argues that some citizens have opposed the invasion of Ukraine since the beginning of the war for humanitarian and legal reasons. On the other hand, war supporters are disappointed with Putin because the war did not go as hoped.

Opposition politicians stress that “the Russian army is currently in the process of destruction, so we are losing people, we are losing weapons and we will soon lose our ability to defend ourselves”. Even the vast Russian propaganda cannot mask the growing discontent of the citizens.
