Tea drinkers live longer – Wel.nl

Do you belong to the camp of coffee drinkers or to the tea party? In the latter case you score points: new research shows that tea drinkers live longer and healthier lives.

More than 100,000 Chinese took part in the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences study. They were followed for seven years. Whoever drinks tea daily would, on average, live 15 months longer than those who never take a cup of tea. In addition, they were 20 percent less likely to have a stroke and 15 percent less likely to die prematurely. A second study of about 15,000 people came with even more striking results: the tea drinkers were no less than 29 percent less likely to die.

Green tea in particular turned out to be very healthy. “With green tea you can benefit more quickly from the beneficial effects. Very concretely: 3 cups per day already have a positive effect. Black tea is about 5 cups a day, “says Flemish nutrition expert Loes Neven. Striking: the positive effects only apply to tea from the tea plant and not to herbal tea or mint tea.
