In the midst of a pandemic and with a drop in credit to the private sector, only three banks lent more: which are

In 2020, bank margins were limited by the impact of the pandemic. However, in a context of a sharp decline in credit to the private sector, there was three entities of the local financial system that improved their performance and they managed to escape this dynamic and presented a real growth of more than 6% per year.

According to an IARAF report, they are the Banco de la Provincia de Córdoba, Banco Galicia and BBVA. While in the total system, the placement of loans contracted more than 2.6%, these three entities They managed to place 7.8%, 6.4% and 6% more than in 2019. At the other end of the table, HSBC, Banco Ciudad and Supervielle, had a collapse of the loans placed of up to 21.3% in real terms.

On the deposit side, the report details: “In December 2020, the main entities considered had private sector deposits for $ 5,798,862 million, representing 88.1% of the total of private sector deposits. “In this way, the pesos captured by the banks rose 18.4% in real terms in the main ones, while, if we look at the entire system, the increase was 19.1%.

The IARAF study shows that in five entities the increase in the collection of deposits was higher than 30% per year and ranks Banco Itaú as the entity with the best performance in this area, reaching a 58.3% increase in the amount of pesos deposited in its system.

At the same time, the study highlights that only three banks had a real rise of less than 10%: these are Banco Ciudad, Banco Nación and HSBC, the latter reporting a drop of 0.7%.

The study carried out by the economist Nadin Argañaraz serves to differentiate what was the banks’ favorite business for pesos collected during the twelve months of last year. While some boosted credit, others must have used that funding to invest in other tools, such as Central Bank Liquidity Bills (Leliq).

According to the report seven entities increased both deposits and loans: Banco de Córdoba, Banco de la Nación Argentina, Banco Santander, Banco Galicia, Citibank, Itaú and BBVA Argentina. “On the other hand, seven other banks raised the real level of deposits, but lowered the real amount of loans. These were Banco Macro, Banco Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Banco Credicoop, Banco Patagonia, Banco Provincia de Buenos Aires, Banco Supervielle and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, “the study detailed.
