Getting drunk instead of getting drunk at a wedding

The new generations do not like alcohol and are looking for a safe experience

Brian is a 30-year-old American entrepreneur who last year decided to spice up his marriage by handing out magic mushroom chocolates to younger guests. He takes a few and carries them into his jacket pockets, but suddenly finds they are gone within minutes because there are too many people wanting to try them on. He later attended eight wedding receptions, all of which included a small gift of hallucinogenic mushrooms, ensuring fun without the need to get drunk during the next day’s hangover.

“I just knew a lot of people at my wedding would do this, so I thought I’d give it a try,” Brian told fashion trend site The Cut. Also, unlike cocaine, which has also been seen used at parties, magic mushrooms do not increase the desire to drink alcohol and do not lead to aggressive or inappropriate behavior. “When we took flavored chocolates with them in small quantities, we didn’t have a single problem. The most damaging thing that can happen using them is that someone gets distracted for a while and has fun alone looking at the moon,” explains the business owner.

Smith, who works at an American wedding agency, says she increasingly has to meet the demands of newlyweds to ensure a good time for their guests by offering them a treat containing magic mushrooms. He also had to stop a couple who wanted to distribute some of the famous candies to everyone attending their wedding, so that they would have a more open heart about what was happening. “I told them that they absolutely cannot do such a thing without first explaining what it contains and how it works, and that our company would not run it in any way,” she reveals. In the end, only 20-30 guests were treated with mushroom candy. Marriage agents explain this new fashion in their business with at least a few factors. The first is the pandemic, during which people have been deprived of memorable emotional experiences for a long time and now want to catch up at any cost. Furthermore, generations are currently marrying who are not as passionate about alcohol as the previous ones. They increasingly rely on opiates for fun.

And it’s not just a US trend. The Times reports that getting drunk instead of getting drunk at a wedding is also a trend in Britain. The 35-year-old mother of two told the British publication that she has already been to three wedding receptions since the beginning of the year the magic mushroom chocolate was offered and she thinks it is very practical for family reunions. Gone are the bad drunk scenes that parents wonder how to explain to their little ones. Also missing is the severe hangover that keeps you from starting the work week jaw-droppingly.

Although they are growing in popularity, magic mushroom chocolate desserts are not sold freely in either the US or the UK, as they are classified as drugs. They are usually ordered via coded messages online, with the vendor using various tricks to remain anonymous as they are essentially engaging in illegal activities, although it is claimed that there are some benefits to using them in small doses.

According to the US Institute of Drug Abuse, magic mushrooms can induce feelings of relaxation and have effects similar to marijuana. Like other hallucinogenic drugs, they act on parts of the brain that regulate abstract thinking and play a key role in mood and perception. This is why many people who have tried them report that they “see the sounds” and “hear the colors”.

Studies show that the effect in question is due to the psychoactive ingredient psilocybin in magic mushrooms, which affects communication between different neural pathways in the brain and increases activity between networks that don’t normally interact. For this reason, some scientists believe they can help treat depression. Among them is David Nutt of Imperial College London, who has studied the effects of psilocybin on brain activity and found that it acts on the very centers that play a role in our sense of self. In general, it is too strong when we experience depressive thoughts and with the use of magic mushrooms it has been observed that it weakens.

Two US studies also concluded that psilocybin can help manage depression and anxiety when taken in adequate amounts. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that it can even cause people who abuse alcohol to limit their consumption or give it up altogether. So it is probably only a matter of time before its use is allowed for medicinal purposes, as has already happened with cannabis in some countries.

Until then, however, the use of magic mushrooms, even if embedded in chocolates, is considered a crime. And the Bulgarian legislation on the matter is as strict as that of the United States and the English, even if in some areas of Bulgaria there are natural deposits and the police periodically denounce the detained collectors. Last year, for example, a 38-year-old man from Asenovgrad was arrested in the Hajdushki Polyani area near Smolyan for harvesting 60 grams of wolf tooth mushroom, which has a narcotic effect when eaten.

“In a lot of marriages I’ve been to, people take drugs. They take ecstasy, mushrooms or something else, but they do it secretly, which I don’t like,” says American Jake. Therefore, when it comes time to marry his beloved Amanda, he decides to make things “more human”. Their wedding takes place on a mountain campsite, which suggests more freedom. Jake orders two types of magic mushroom capsules: 0.1 gram and half gram. He gives them to some trusted friends to distribute, asking them to explain to anyone interested what he’s getting into. “What we wanted for our wedding was for guests to be able to freely connect with each other and enjoy the great outdoors. Mushrooms really did a great job for people who wanted to do it,” says Jake. They choose to be discreet when they distribute them, so as not to clash with older family members and because they don’t want their loved ones to get involved in something they don’t feel the need for, just because it’s fashionable. mainly because it is illegal.

They warn about chocolate with magic mushrooms

Police in Florida warned they found magic mushroom chocolate that could easily fall into children’s hands due to its colorful packaging. This happened during an anti-drug distribution operation, mainly stalking methamphetamine sellers. Surprisingly, however, the police also found attractive chocolate bars in their possession, which contained psilocybin.

According to local police chief David Brannon, drug dealers try to make it look like it’s not dangerous at all and make people become addicted to their products so they can continue using them. He then urged parents to talk to their children about the matter. To inform them that magic mushrooms are not harmless even in small quantities as part of chocolate. They can cause nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, delusions, and an inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality.

The warning comes after years of US authorities cracking down on colored candy containing fentanyl. It is a potent opioid that is used as a pain reliever for those dying from cancer, but is gradually taking over a significant portion of the illegal drug market in the United States as well. And it’s already linked to nearly half of the country’s 90,000 overdose deaths each year.
