Eduard Krečmar: Remembering the Genius of Czech Lyricism in Pop Music

The man who filled melodies with his words has left the world of popular music. After a serious illness, Eduard Krečmar died on Sunday at the age of 81. Among his most famous texts are, for example, Be still young, The soap prince, Just argue or Boots against love.

One of the most important lyricists of Czech and Czechoslovakian pop remained rather out of the limelight during his career, yet thanks to his work the most famous Czech singers were able to shine all the more in front of the audience. During his lifetime, he wrote more than 1,600 song texts and participated in the creation of musicals and music recitals.

At the age of 81, Eduard Krečmar succumbed to a serious illness. Moderator Martin Hrdinka announced his death on social networks on Monday. “The genius of our lyricism has passed away,” he said briefly by way of farewell.

He was most famous in the 70s and 80s of the last century. It is worth, for example, the lyrics for the hits “Jen se hajde” for Karel Gott or “Slagra”. Soap prince, which was sung by Václav Neckář. The fruitful collaboration with the biggest names in Czech pop culture also resulted in lyrics for songs in the films Metráček, Valley of the Beautiful Frogs or the fairy tale Goldilocks.

“He gave all the lyrics to the taken music something of his own – such humor and lightness. That was his charm. He was able to write lyrics with great insight and include lyricism and romance,“Václav Svoboda, the director-in-chief of Nova TV, recalled him in an interview, recalling, for example, songs I want to kiss you Václav Neckár or the lyrics to the song Mama by Marta Kubišová.

Since the 1990s, Krečmar has contributed to the texts for Czech musicals such as Puss in Boots, Dreamy Romance or Tower of Babylon. He also wrote Czech texts for famous animated films for children such as Pocahontas, The Lion King or Shrek. In 2015, he received the Gold Award of the Authors’ Protection Union (OSA) for his contribution to Czech music.
