After the holidays, many people complain of muscle pain due to long drives or preparing holiday meals. When you feel this kind of muscle pain, you often think about applying a patch, but in fact, there is not only one type of patch. Depending on the function, it is divided into ‘cool pad’, which adds cold sensation, and ‘hot pad’, which adds heat. Caution is needed as using it in inappropriate situations can make symptoms worse. Paste is a medicine or quasi-drug used for muscle pain, bruises, etc., and acts to relieve pain in the affected area and suppress inflammation. It is also known as an anti-inflammatory analgesic that is applied to the skin, and because the drug itself is delivered directly to the affected area, the therapeutic effect appears quickly.

‘Cool Pas’ is used for acute pain, and ‘Hot Pas’ is used for chronic pain.
It is best to use the paste separately depending on the active ingredients and the condition of the affected area.

First, as the name suggests, a cool pad is a pad that gives a cool feeling when applied. These cool pads are suitable for acute bruises, sprains, bruises, and minor fractures. It is the same principle as applying a cold compress when swelling occurs. Coolpas contains ingredients such as ‘menthol’ and ‘camphor’, which help relieve acute inflammation and swelling by cooling the skin and constricting blood vessels.

On the other hand, if pain continues after the swelling goes down, use a hot paste that provides a warm feeling. It is suitable for chronic arthritis, neuralgia, muscle stiffness, etc. This is because it contains ‘chili extract (capsaicin)’, the main ingredient of chili peppers, which warms the painful area and promotes blood circulation, allowing the analgesic ingredient to penetrate the skin.

As mentioned earlier, cool pads and hot pads can make symptoms worse if used incorrectly in the opposite situation. Hot pads dilate blood vessels and can actually worsen swelling and bleeding. Conversely, if Coolpas is used in areas such as chronic arthritis, neuralgia, or muscle tightness, the blood vessels may constrict and the pain may become worse.

Because the paste directly irritates the skin, side effects such as allergies and contact dermatitis may occur, so it must be used with caution. First, do not use it on dermatitis or wounds, and do not leave it on for longer than the designated time. Generally, the paste is replaced after 12 hours, but depending on some products, the effect may last for 24 to 48 hours, so you must check the usage and dosage for each product. If you experience itchiness or rash during use, stop using it immediately. In particular, hot pads can sometimes cause burns, so if you experience a severe stinging or burning sensation, you should stop using it immediately.

Just because the patch does not come off the skin easily, you should not pull it off all at once. You should hold the patch with one hand and gently remove it by pressing the affected area with the other hand. If the paste is stuck too tightly, soak it in water for 1-2 minutes and then remove it.
