women who have sex more often come later in the menopause – Wel.nl

Women who have sex more often come later in the menopause. This is the conclusion of a study among 3,000 women at University College London (UCL).

According to the researchers, women who are sexually active on a weekly or monthly basis have a smaller chance of having an early menopause than women who have sex less often.

More precisely: women who have sex every week are 28 percent less likely to have an early menopause than women who are sexually active less than monthly. This is not only about sexual intercourse, but also about oral sex, sexual touch and masturbation.

Researcher Megan Arnot says: “The findings of our research suggest that if a woman has no sex and there is no chance of pregnancy, the body” chooses “not to invest in ovulation because it would be useless.”

“Menopause is of course inevitable for women, and no kind of behavior can prevent women from losing their ability to reproduce sooner or later,” emphasizes fellow researcher Megan Arnot. “Nevertheless, these results are a first indication that the timing of the menopause may adjust in response to the chance of pregnancy.”

The study appeared in the Royal Society Open Science journal
