“The spread of the new coronavirus in Estonia has grown rapidly, so the renewal of national restrictions is necessary and justified,” said Prime Minister Jiri Ratass. “We see the virus spreading particularly well at parties. Unfortunately, alcohol consumption affects people’s behavior by promoting the spread of the virus. Therefore, I urge people to refrain from risky behavior at both public events and private parties, without giving the disease new opportunities to spread.”

From midnight to 10 am, alcohol may not be sold in places where it is sold for consumption on the spot, such as bars, nightclubs, restaurants, theater buffets and hotels.

The ban will take effect on the night of September 26, and from then on, the existing regional restrictions set by the Police and Border Guard Department will expire.

It will run until October 24, and a week before that deadline, the government will consider extending it. Compliance with the ban must be monitored by local authorities.

According to the Estonian Department of Health, the 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population on September 17 in Estonia is 25.36. By comparison, on 1 August the figure was 4.4 and on 15 August it was 8.4.

The spread of the virus in Estonia has been largely due to outbreaks that began in the summer in several bars in Tartu and Ida-Viru counties.
