This is how you recognize breast cancer – Wel.nl

One in eight women in the Netherlands is told somewhere in her life that she has breast cancer. If you get there on time, it can be treated well, so you will benefit a lot if you are able to recognize the disease yourself. Until now, it has always been recommended to check your breasts for lumps, but there are many more irregularities in your breast that can indicate cancer. That is why there is now a photo circulating online with twelve lemons showing how the disease can manifest.

The “Know your lemons” campaign, conceived by Corrine Beaumont, is a great success. The young designer sees the lemons as a playful, friendly way to spotlight breast cancer. It can cause women to overcome their fear of the disease. “Some don’t want to talk about or look at breasts,” said Beaumont.

A survey of a thousand British women shows that a third of them never check their breasts and only a quarter know that a retracted nipple is also a symptom of cancer. Oncology professor Jayant Vaidya of University College London says that notches, dimples or flattening of the chest can also be early signals, especially when you lift your arm or lean forward. The most important thing is to know your own breasts and to watch for deviations from the normal.
