They demand more security in parks in upper Manhattan

After the attack on three women in an Inwood park in the middle of this week, and with the alleged perpetrator without being caught, Councilor Ydanis Rodriguez demanded additional resources from the City Council to improve security in the vicinity of Fort Washington Park, Fort Tryon Park and Highbridge Park and Inwood Hill Park, areas with large Latino populations.

“The working class, the middle class that lives here also deserves and has the right to have police,” said Councilor Rodríguez.

“It means that more security is needed and that is what everyone thinks,” said a visitor to the park.

Rodríguez assures that the budget allows the allocation of 25 more elements of the Park Patrol (PEP) and more officers of the NYPD to horse and electric scooters. The residents of the area want more vigilance no matter what uniform they wear.

“We need more vigilance to walk in the parks now in the summer and during the day,” said a neighbor.

“First of all, the park has to be more illuminated. Walking through that area one feels completely safe because there is also little police surveillance,” added another neighbor.

Hours later, Mayor de Blasio assured on Twitter that more uniforms will be assigned immediately.

However, there remains a certain distrust of the police on the part of the Latino and African American community, with some preferring PEP elements.

“Park security personnel more than the police themselves, since they have an authority figure but they know and are part of the community in which we are immersed. Or perhaps, female police officers. The truth is that with female police officers I I always feel super safe, “said another visitor to the park.

Mayor de Blasio did not specify from when or how much officials will be assigned to parks in upper Manhattan.
