The VVD only pays lip service to the concern for the climate and in fact considers the interests of the business community more important than the survival of humanity. That’s what historian and opinion leader claims Thijs Kleinpaste in NRC.

Rutte believes that everything must remain ‘feasible and affordable’. Kleinpaste: “Rutte’s words are nothing more than that: words. The ten-year track record of Rutte is appalling, the balance sheet of the cabinet that is currently waiting for replacement is bad. The ‘greenest cabinet ever'” achieves the self-imposed target for CO2reduction is not, while that ambition is already lower than the European target that the Netherlands is, in word, in favor of.”

The Rutte management culture, Kleinpaste believes, is that of a closed caste that finds ordinary people and their interests a hindrance above all, and is more focused on maintaining itself and its power than on delivering responsible policy. In the case of a problem like climate change, a downright existential danger.
