The United States has issued such a call in response to the success of the Tigris People’s Liberation Front (TTAF) rebels, including the threat to the capital, Addis Ababa.
“The security environment in Ethiopia is highly volatile. We recommend that U.S. citizens in Ethiopia leave the country as soon as possible,” the U.S. embassy in Ethiopia said in a statement.
The US State Department also this week called on Americans to avoid traveling to Ethiopia.
Ethiopia launched a military operation in the Tigris region in November last year in an effort to reduce the influence of the TTAF, which governs the region and is critical of the central government.
TTAF dominated Ethiopia for about 25 years, until 2018 Aby Ahmed became Prime Minister.
Nine rebel groups, including the TTAF, which is fighting the Ethiopian government, said on Friday they would “work together and join forces” to defeat the Ahmed government.
