The Rising Popularity and Decreased Cost of Solar Panels: A Game-Changer in Energy Consumption

If anything is currently significantly cheaper, it is the purchase price of solar panels and some photovoltaic components. Panel prices fell by 40 percent year-on-year, and the entire power plant for a family home will cost approximately one-fifth cheaper than a year ago.

We had the biggest solar boom last year. But those who waited until this year to build photovoltaics will save an average of 20 percent. “Our initial investment has decreased significantly, on the order of 20 percent. If we are talking about the most typical 10 kWp, it used to be 600 to 700 thousand, now we are in the range of around half a million crowns,” says salesman Jakub Čáslava.

In September, solar panel prices were 10 percent lower than in August, a third drop since the beginning of the year. This is due to the confluence of several factors, for example, the US wants to support its own manufacturers, and therefore imposed a 35 percent tariff on the import of Chinese photo panels.

“New technologies are emerging, the scary panels are getting cheaper, and as the European market is flooded with Chinese components, it leads to cheaper prices,” explained economist Štěpán Křeček.

Some economists even claim that solar panels are already sold below the production price in order for manufacturers to minimize their losses. And beware, there are big differences between the companies that supply and install the panels. Before signing the contract, pay attention to the reputation of the company and compare several offers. “Some companies are guilty of subsidies, that’s why they have deliberately higher prices with the fact that part of the price is paid by the customer and not the state,” Křeček continued.

The state still pays subsidies for the solar power plant. If it costs you over 400,000, the state will contribute half of it. “The return on investment depends on the purchase price, but more important is the current energy price, now something between five and eight years,” Čáslava added.

The supplier should also have all the necessary certificates. Improper installation leads to fires more and more often. “Last year, we registered 28 photovoltaic fires for the whole of last year, this year we are already at 45 in the first seven months,” calculated fire brigade spokesperson Martina Götzová.

Mr. Petr Turnský also enjoyed his time with the solar panels. “The batteries stopped working, the lights were red, it all ended up in court,” he described.

Manufacturers usually state that the lifespan of solar panels is between 20 and 25 years. This year, 45,000 households had photovoltaics installed on their houses.
