“The last week has been the most difficult time of my entire political career,” the minister wrote on the social network Facebook. “I am facing strong pressure from not separating the roles of minister and mother. I admit that I have made a mistake and I apologize for that.”
“I want to provide my minor children with a safe and peaceful atmosphere, so today I decided to resign as Minister of Education and Science and take political responsibility for my mistakes in reconciling work and family life,” she said.
Repsa has headed the Estonian Ministry of Education and Science since 2016, but previously held the position from 2002 to 2003 and from 2005 to 2007. After resigning, she will continue working in parliament.
The Prime Minister of Estonia, the leader of the Center Party Jiri Ratass, has promised to nominate a new candidate for the position of Minister of Education in the near future, but at the same time thanked the Minister for her achievements and wished “success in the work of the Riga Council.
“Mailis is undoubtedly a strong minister, an old member of the party and a good friend. This is undoubtedly a great loss to both the education industry and the government,” he said.
