More than 20 guests at a hotel on the Croatian island of Korčula were struggling with health problems. People who used the kitchen there subsequently complained of diarrhoea, fatigue and high temperatures. However, according to the hotel management, it is not poisoning. Doctors are convinced that it is a summer virus.
Tourists who stayed at the Adria Hotel in Vela Luka on the island of Korčula are suspected of food poisoning. About 20 of them, who are of different nationalities, were facing similar health problems on Thursday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
They suffered from nausea, vomiting, fatigue, diarrhea, and in some of them, an elevated temperature appeared gradually. One woman had a fever of up to 40 degrees, the portal writes Jutarnji.hr.
One family even ended up in the emergency room. In addition, their child was vomiting all day and had to receive an IV. “The wife is still not well. At the emergency room, they told us that according to the symptoms, it is probably food poisoning. But the diagnosis will be confirmed only after further analyses,” described the tourist from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
According to him, however, the conditions in the hotel are not exactly ideal. “It occurred to me that a lot of uneaten food from lunch or dinner gets reheated the next day. We saw a lot of salads with mayonnaise. But when people started to get sick, mayonnaise disappeared from the menu,” he said.
However, according to the hotel management, it is not poisoning. “After the cases were reported, we immediately contacted the sanitary control office in Korčula and also the epidemiological service. They took stool samples from several employees and guests. They also did surface smears. They found that the clients were not suffering from food poisoning, but from a gastrointestinal virus,” he told the portal Free Dalmatia hotel director Deni Surjan.
Guests who complained about the problems were refunded by the hotel for two nights. Some even left the hotel due to the situation. However, according to doctors, other tourists on the island and local residents have also complained of similar health problems in recent days. According to them, infection with a gastrointestinal virus is not unusual in July and August.
“Hygienic control and epidemiologists, after checking and taking samples, concluded that it was a summer virus. Three people sought medical help, the rest did not even visit a doctor due to mild symptoms. These are people who are staying in different facilities, not just in one hotel,” said doctor from the regional Institute for Public Health Mato Lakić.
According to doctors, viruses primarily spread from person to person during close contact, for example between children on the beach. “Viruses like this appear every summer. This time it’s a bit more intense, because during the coronavirus pandemic we didn’t really have a summer virus. Everyone followed hygiene measures,” concluded Lakić.
