North Korea executes man who imports copies of Netflix series

The man was arrested after authorities in North Korea caught seven high school students watching a South Korean series banned in the country.

Copied serial copies of USB flash drives imported into North Korea from China.

The pupil who had purchased the flash memory has been sentenced to life imprisonment, while the other six who have watched the series will have to go to a labor camp. School administration and teachers have also been laid off.

The detention of seven students is the first time the government has applied the newly adopted law on the elimination of reactionary thought and culture in a case involving minors.

A law passed last year provides for severe penalties, including the death penalty, for watching, possessing or distributing media in capitalist countries, especially South Korea and the United States. North Korea believes that Korean and American pop music, for example, have played a significant role in undermining North Korean propaganda.

“The government takes the incident very seriously, saying pupils’ education is being neglected. The central committee has dismissed the school’s principals, their youth secretaries and their teachers,” the source told the media.

There are fears that the detained students will be questioned to find out how they got a copy of the series.
