Soybean Extract Shows Promise in Inhibiting Breast Cancer Growth, Study Shows

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of death from cancer in women worldwide. Breast cancer treatment is still controlled by conventional medical treatment, such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. These treatments often cause side effects and affect the patient’s quality of life.

The potential use of natural ingredients in the treatment of cancer is an interesting topic for research. Fellows in Biomedical Science Doctoral Program, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI), Andrew Muh. Maulana, S.Si., M.Sc., He explained that soybeans, which are one of the food ingredients that are often eaten, contain anti-cancer compounds, such as isoflavones and saponins. Previous studies (Ravishankar et al, 2013) suggested several protective mechanisms for isoflavone compounds against the risk of cancer, namely by directly inhibiting stress and oxidative damage, as well as inhibiting the development of cancer cells .

“Research on the ability of soybean extract compounds in Indonesia to grow cancer cells is still very limited. “This research was carried out to further investigate this possibility by conducting clinical trials on mice induced by DMBA, then we evaluated the clinical outcomes, the immune response, the appearance of the cancer tissue, and the activity of the tumor,” said Andi at the doctoral. promotion session.

Andi explained more about his study of 30 mice Sprague-Dawley This shows a positive response to the soy extract treatment that was given. Soy products have been proven to have a direct effect on tumors by significantly reducing the number, size and volume of tumors. The expression of Ki-67 and VEGF proteins that play a role in tumor growth was inhibited after the administration of soybean juice therapy. In addition, it has also been observed that this compound is able to increase the body’s immunity against malignant diseases by causing an increase in the efficiency of the action of cytotoxic T cells or killer cells in fighting cancer cells.

“We hope that this research is the first step in creating a safer breast cancer adjuvant therapy so that the side effects of current medical treatment can be reduced. However, more research is definitely needed on this before we can apply it directly to humans. “We hope that the results of this research will contribute to efforts to reduce the morbidity and mortality rates of breast cancer worldwide,” Andi said at the end of his presentation.

Dissertation research done by Andi Muh. Maulana entitled “Soybean Extract Inhibits Pathogenesis of DMBA-Induced Rat Breast Cancer: Clinical Study, Immune Response, Histopathology, Ki-67 and VEGF Protein Expression”. Andi successfully defended this research by answering various questions and objections from the research team headed by Dr. Drs. Heri Wibowo, MSand members of the test team, that is, Dr AS dr. Rustamadji Primary School, MM, Sp.PA(K); Prof. Mr. Bambang Pontjo will be a prisoner, MS, Ph.D., APVet., DACCM (Professor at IPB University); Prof. Taifo Mahmud, Ph.D (Oregon State University, United States); And Dr AS dr. Sjahjenny Stock, Sp.PA(K), MIAC (Airlanga University).

The doctor’s motivational session was conducted by Prof. Dr. Dr. Rini Sekartini, Sp.A(K), he is the promoter of this doctoral promotion session Prof. Dr. Dr. Kusmardi, MS with co-promoters Prof. Dr. Dr. Erni Hernawati Purwaningsih, MS and Prof. Prof. Prof. Andon Hestiantoro, Sp.OG(K), MPH

During his speech, the promoter said Prof. Kusmardi said, “I congratulate Dr. Andrew Muh. Maulana, SSi, M.Sc., I hope with this level of education you can produce more jobs. The topic of research done by Brother Andi regarding the use of soybean extract to prevent the growth of breast cancer is very interesting. This research is very broad as it also includes the study of immunology as well as the growth of cancer itself. “We hope that the findings from this research will continue to advance and improve clinical practice in medicine, especially breast cancer.”
