In order to protect itself from the spread of the new – presumably more contagious – Corona variant, Israel seals itself off: no foreigner is allowed to enter the country. Returning Israelis must be in quarantine for up to 14 days.
In view of the spread of the new coronavirus variant, Israel has taken tough measures: The Corona cabinet decided to prohibit foreigners from all countries from entering the country. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there are exceptions to this rule, such as with diplomats. “We have a new epidemic with a virus whose properties we do not know exactly,” said the 71-year-old about the decision. “This mutation could also be Corona 2.”
Quarantine in the “Corona Hotel”
Foreigners have only been able to visit Israel to a limited extent since the pandemic began. Israelis must be quarantined in so-called corona hotels from Wednesday at 10:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. CET) after their entry, as the government decided. They have to stay there for at least ten days if two corona tests are negative. They even have to stay there for 14 days without testing. “I know this will be a tough decision, but we have no other choice,” said Netanyahu.
Entrants must immediately go to home quarantine by Wednesday. Passengers from Great Britain, South Africa and Denmark must be brought to Corona hotels beforehand after the decision. Travelers from all countries where a test is positive must therefore go to special hotels for people with corona. The new regulations will initially apply for ten days, but can still be extended.
