Leaked Emails: Microsoft’s Interest in Buying Nintendo and Other Gaming Giants

Here it is again. This information has surfaced before and now it is back in a more detailed presentation. Emails between Xbox head Phil Spencer, chief marketing officer Chris Caposseli and executive vice president and chief marketing officer Takeshi Numoto have been leaked online.

The emails were sent in 2020 and are part of a major leak in the dispute between Microsoft and the US Federal Trade Commission. You may have already read:

The new emails show that Microsoft is very interested in buying Nintendo. The tech giant is aware of the Japanese brand’s popularity and rich catalog of games, including Mario. An acquisition would certainly solve Xbox’s problem in Japan. Of course Microsoft doesn’t want a hostile takeover.

Spencer even writes in the e-mail that he has had numerous conversations with Nintendo’s board of directors about working more closely together and feels that if any American company has a chance to acquire Nintendo, they are probably in the best position.

But he also mentions obstacles. Nintendo is apparently not interested in an acquisition. “They’re sitting on a big pile of cash,” Spencer wrote, adding that he doesn’t see an option to buy Nintendo in the near term. So Microsoft is playing the long game with them. Later he also wrote that Nintendo is taking a long time to understand that its future exists outside of its own hardware.

It will also sound in the e-mail acquisition of Warner Bros. Interactive and ZeniMax with Bethesda. Spencer described both companies as ones that can be bought, but in the case of Warner Bros. he pointed out a big problem. Microsoft would acquire Avalanche Software, Monolith Productions, NetherRealm Studios or Rocksteady Games under its wing. The problem, however, is the rights to the brands, including Batman Arkham and Mortal Kombat, which would remain with Warner Bros.

As we know, negotiations with ZeniMax Media were ultimately successful and Microsoft bought the company for $7.5 billion. However, the emails also feature Steam-owned Valve and China’s TikTok.

Anyway, this new leak follows on from earlier information. In 2020, Microsoft was also interested in buying Sega, which was among the 46 companies under consideration, along with Bandai Namco, Capcom, Konami, Square Enix, Take-Two Interactive, Ubisoft, Valve, and independent studios, including IO Interactive with the Hitman brand.
