Don’t Believe the Myth: Sticking Your Wet Smartphone in Rice Won’t Dry It

That urban myth of sticking your wet smartphone into rice to dry it is just that, a myth. There’s better ways to dry it.

For more than a decade, a majority of Americans have owned smartphones – and, inevitably, some of us have dropped our beloved devices in a swimming pool, sink, or even the toilet.

Did your iPhone get wet? Here’s what Apple says to do

Apple, one of the leading technology companies, debunks the myth of using rice to dry a wet smartphone. Apple advises against putting a wet iPhone into a bag of rice, as this can potentially cause damage. According to their support site, small particles of rice may harm your device if it comes in contact.

As an alternative, Apple recommends the following steps to address the situation:

  • First, unplug the Lightning or USB-C cable from your iPhone and its power source.
  • Ensure that both your iPhone and the cable are completely dry before plugging it in again.
  • Gently tap your iPhone against your hand, with the connector facing down, to help remove excess liquid.
  • Place your iPhone in a dry area with some airflow to aid in the drying process.
  • After at least 30 minutes, attempt to charge your iPhone.
  • If the liquid detection alert reappears, continue leaving your iPhone in a dry area with airflow, as it may take up to a day to fully dry. During this time, you can try charging it again.

What to do if your smartphone gets wet. Hint: don’t put it in rice

Apple is not the only technology giant advising against the rice drying technique. Samsung, another industry expert, cautions against this method as well. Samsung, known for its Galaxy devices, offers the following recommendations if your smartphone gets wet:

  • Turn off the device and remove the battery, if possible. Samsung provides detailed instructions on its support site.
  • Wipe off any moisture from the exterior, earphone jack, and charging port using a cotton ball or swab.
  • In case your device is exposed to seawater, chlorinated water, or drinks, Samsung suggests soaking it in clean water. For more guidance, refer to Samsung’s support page.
  • Afterward, it is crucial to air dry the waterlogged device in a well-ventilated area or in the shade with cool air from a fan. Avoid using a hairdryer or hot air. If the problem persists, Samsung recommends consulting a service center for further assistance.

Asurion, a renowned tech insurer and repair company, provides additional tips:

  • As a first step, turn off your device and keep it that way.
  • Remove the protective case, battery (if applicable), SIM card, and microSD card (if present).
  • Dab your phone dry using a cloth or paper towel.
  • If the device was submerged, gently vacuum the creases and openings.
  • Avoid exposing the phone to heat or direct sunlight. Store it in a cool, dry place.
  • Instead of rice, consider using silica gel packets in a sealed plastic bag along with your phone for 24-48 hours.
  • Once dried, attempt to power on your device. Charge it fully if necessary. Reach out to a uBreakiFix® repair store if the problem persists.

It’s crucial to handle a wet smartphone properly to prevent further damage. Follow the recommendations provided by Apple, Samsung, and Asurion to safeguard your device.
