Doctors have named a sign that 80% of patients with COVID have “News of Vladivostok and Primorsky Krai

Spanish scientists have found that more than 80 percent of COVID-19 patients are deficient in vitamin D. Moreover, this symptom is more common in men. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Vesti: Primorye reports with reference to RIA Novosti.

Medical statistics show that many modern people, especially the elderly, are deficient in vitamin D. Also, recently there have been many publications about the important role of vitamin D in the COVID-19 pandemic, which ensures the body’s resistance to coronavirus.

Spanish medical scientists decided to find out if low levels of vitamin D can be a risk factor for COVID-19 disease, and whether this affects the severity of the disease.

The study involved 216 patients with confirmed COVID-19 who were admitted to the Marques de Valdecilla Hospital at the University of Cantabria in Santander. The authors evaluated their blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD), a hydroxylated form of vitamin D3 that is involved in metabolic reactions in the body. In parallel, the level of 25OHD was measured in 197 normal healthy people from the control group.

The authors found that 82.2 percent of COVID-19 patients were vitamin D deficient, while the level in men was lower than in women.

“One preventive approach is to identify and treat vitamin D deficiency, especially in the elderly, patients with underlying medical conditions and residents of nursing homes, who are the main risk group for COVID-19,” the leader said in a press release from the International Endocrinological Society. research by Dr. José Hernández.

Vitamin D is a hormone produced by the kidneys that controls the concentration of calcium in the blood. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to a myriad of health problems, although research is still underway on how the hormone affects the body’s systems. Many studies point to the beneficial effects of vitamin D on the immune system, especially in terms of protecting against infections.

“Vitamin D supplementation should be recommended for COVID-19 patients with low blood levels. This can have positive effects on both the musculoskeletal system and the immune system,” says the scientist.

In conclusion, the authors note that they found no relationship between the level of vitamin D in the blood of patients and the severity of the disease.
