Comedian and actor Gilbert Gottfried has passed away

“With a broken heart, we announce the departure of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness,” the family said in a statement.

According to the family, Gottfried was “the most iconic voice in comedy,” and he was a wonderful husband, brother, friend, and father to his two young children.

“Although today is a sad day for all of us, we ask that you continue to laugh as loudly as possible in honor of Gilbert,” the family writes.

Gilbert Gottfried gained widespread publicity after speaking to the image of the parrot Iago in Walt Disney’s animated film Aladdin (1992). He is also known for roles in films such as “Problem Child” (1990), “Problem Child 2” (1991), “Look Who’s Talking Too” (1990), and “The Adventures of Ford Fairlane” (1990).
