The speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri, has asked that the parliamentary session, scheduled for next Thursday, to elect a president of the republic, be transformed into a session of dialogue, in an attempt to open a loophole in the impasse that is hindering his election. While an important parliamentary source confirmed that the overwhelming parliamentary majority expressed immediate approval of his invitation.
The source told Asharq Al-Awsat that Berri is waiting for the reaction of the Lebanese forces and the free patriotic movement, so he can build on what he requests. Because their lack of response will lead to endlessly prolonging the game of interrupting the electoral sessions, and this is what leads to crowding the representatives before the Lebanese public opinion, and through it the international community, which insists on stopping the farce of calls for election sessions that end with the continuation of the vacancy in the first presidency.
The source stressed that the mere consent of the “Lebanese Forces” party and the “Free Patriotic Movement” to participate in the dialogue session in search of a way out leads to removing the election of a president from the political impasse, which it is still besieging it. It means that the path could be paved for agreeing on the name of the candidate who enjoys the support of the parliamentary majority, warning that their non-participation will inevitably lead to a repetition of the filibuster game.
He believes that the next few hours will be decisive in determining whether to proceed with an open dialogue session, or to return to the electoral sessions, which will end in the same way as the previous sessions. He said that the participation of one of the parties in the dialogue will prompt the Prime Minister to confirm his call for dialogue, even if he would prefer that the answer reach him in a way that leads to the completion of the contract of those invited to the dialogue.
