“Anyone who still sees people will almost certainly come into contact with the virus” – Wel.nl

The contamination figures for our southern neighbors are dramatic. The hospitals are in danger of being inundated with corona patients and up to 40 percent of the tests administered are positive. According to professor of biostatistics Geert Molenberghs (UHasselt) there is nothing else for it than a complete lockdown.

In Belgium, an average of more than 14,000 people tested positive. Almost 600 people are admitted to hospitals every day. According to experts, the hospitals will collapse under the pressure. “Conditions are worse now than they were then,” says the statistician against Het Laatste Nieuws. “The virus circulation in society is so great that anyone who comes together with a group of people will almost certainly come into contact with someone who is infected. Someone who probably doesn’t know that himself. If that is a super diffuser, the entire company will be infected. ”

How come the situation gets so out of hand? “The first stressful factor is the autumn. It’s cold and we live indoors. That is a big difference from the situation during the first wave, in the spring. It is now simply more difficult to combat the epidemic, ”explains Molenberghs.

In addition, there are the super spreaders, people who are very contagious without having any symptoms. “If a lot of people are infected, there are relatively many super spreaders. The chance that we will come into contact with that will then be high, ”thinks the professor. “Scientists and hospitals therefore argue in favor of really pulling the emergency brake.”
