Another Danish citizen was killed in a cargo ship collision in the Baltic Sea

The collision between the British-registered Scot Carrier and the Danish ship Karin Hoej took place early in the morning south of the Swedish city of Ystad near the Danish island of Bornholm, media reported.

The Danish ship capsized as a result of the incident and was taken to Sweden by the Swedish coastguard as oil began to leak into the water. When the ship was searched by divers after being brought ashore, the body of a man whose identity has not yet been established was confirmed, a police spokeswoman confirmed.

Another person is missing after the collision and hopes of finding him alive are dwindling. Both the deceased and the missing were Danish nationals and were on board a Danish ship.

The more than 90-meter-long Scot Carrier was on its way from Salacgrīva in Latvia to Montrose in Scotland, while the approximately 55-meter-long “Karin Hoej” had left Södertälje in Sweden and was on its way to Nyköping on the Danish island of Falster.

The cause of the accident is not clear, but it has been suggested that it was due to poor visibility caused by fog.

However, the Swedish Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the alleged serious alcohol intoxication at sea, gross negligence in shipping and serious guilt.

A British citizen born in 1991 and a Croatian citizen born in 1965 were detained after the collision.

Scotline Marine Holdings Limited, which owns Scot Carrier, said all crew members had been tested for drugs and alcohol after the collision and “two crew members had exceeded the legal limit”.

“Scot Marine Holdings confirms that it has a strong policy against drug and alcohol use and zero tolerance for any violations,” the company said in a statement.
